Spokane Family Angered by Security Scammers

(by Andrea Olson, KHQ Local News Producer/Reporter, Click Here to see original)

SPOKANE, Wash. - A family in Spokane's Garland district is feeling like their sense of security has been stolen by a man who claimed he was trying to make them safer. The man said he worked for an alarm company but things didn't seem right.

"It angers me, it angers me a lot. It's fishy," said Spokane resident Jason Krauss. Krauss says he just wants to get the word out after a man came to their house claiming he was with Honeywell marketers and that he wanted to check out their alarm system. "(He) proceeds to wipe his feet and says, 'Should I take my shoes off before I come in?' and she (my wife) goes, 'Uh no we're done.'"

Krauss says there was no identification on the man and things just didn't add up. "He said he had just got done talking to our neighbor from across the street in the yellow house, which there isn't anybody in that yellow house, there hasn't been for three years," said Krauss.

Krauss says he just wants people to be careful, "Ask lots of questions, look for the red flags."

KHQ called Honeywell and asked them if they do have any people that go door to door trying to sell and they said absolutely not.

Krauss says he talked with his neighbors and at least one of them had the same experience with this scammer. Honeywell says a similar case was also reported about two weeks ago in a neighborhood.

If something like this happens to you, police say it's important that your report it so they can work on making an arrest.

This young guy did come to Mallon and had pictures of security system and told me how much it was going to cost.He actually gave me his name and phone number but I threw is away.He wanted to come in to look at the back door and I said the back is like the front door.I was kind of suspicious about this person and felt like telling him I have dogs as my security. He had a cigarette on his ear and a bit of beard on his chin.Did not see a car but he was walking.

These guys came to my house as well. Extreme pressure salesman, young guy that would not leave the porch even after I said I was not interested (rang the bell several times after I closed the door.) They are just a third party seller from what I determined, they get you locked into an agreement and the third party company sells the contract on to Honeywell or ADT whomever they are pitching at the time. If they get you to agree to $30-$40 a month for 36 months the contract to the alarm company is worth over a $1000. I would assume the third party group received several hundred dollars and the sales person receives $50-$100 of that commission. They press hard, because they don't ever use their real company name. The alarm companies have many third party sellers who work for them unfortunately, some good ones and definitely some to avoid.

Sounds exactly like the person who came to my door, including references to Honeywell and neighbors across the street so he's well rehearsed! He didn't ask to come in though. My three large barking dogs might have something to do with that. I told him I thought I already had all the "security system" that I needed.

Same thing with me. We have ADT signs posted as well. He was holding a clipboard and showed me some logo on his shirt and started to say something about posting a sign in my yard, asked me if I've heard of honeywell. I was on the phone at the time holding it my hand and he continued to try to talk to me as I was telling him not interested I'm on the phone. I pretty much had to start to close the door before he said, "you're not interesed are you?" DUH! The guy who came to my house was around 30, smaller build, white, light brown hair! So there's more than one guy. It was in the University & 16th area on Friday the 28th or Saturday the 29th.Don't remember the exact day.

This just recently happened to me!
He was extremely persistent! He pointed out that he saw the ADT sign in our yard & said that Honeywell had a special going on right now. I informed him that it is indeed active & I was not interested. He kept insisting. I finally said, I am NOT interested, & slammed the door on him. Even after I slammed the door shut, I heard him shout that he doesn't see a camera installed by our door. I was freaked big time. So much that I called crime check & reported him. She took down his description, what he looked like & what he was wearing & our address. She said she was going to send a unit to our area.
He did have on a navy blue polo type shirt that said Honeywell on his right sleeve.
A few hours after this happened Ericka & I had left to go somewhere. As we got a few blocks away I saw him walking up to a house & yelled, "omg! That's him!" I went around the block & we drove right up to him, with hopes of getting his name & #.
We pull up along side of him & Ericka says, "excuse me." So he stopped. She said, " you came by our house a while ago & my step dad said he might be interested in what you had talked to my mom about. He wanted to see if we could get your name & number so you could come back &-explain your special to him. So he actually wrote down a name & number.
Ericka called Honeywell right away & asked if they sales reps going door to door & told her about what happened & that he was very persistent.
The gal said they do have companies who do buy & sell their merchandise, but that they in no way have anyone from Honeywell going door to door.
So if a black male, late 20's early 30's, wearing khaki pants & a navy blue shirt with Honeywell on it comes knocking.. Tell him you know he's a scammer & that you are calling the police.
